Near the coast, strong shaking lasting more than 20 seconds is your warning. The earthquake itself is the alert.
Other natural signs: the sea recedes suddenly and exposes the seabed, a loud roar comes from the ocean, or animals move inland.
If any of these happen: move inland and to higher ground immediately. Aim for at least 30 metres of elevation or two kilometres inland. Do not go to the beach to watch.
Stay away until authorities say it is safe. The first wave is often not the largest, and waves can arrive for hours.
If you are in a boat in deep water, stay offshore. If you are in a harbour, leave the boat and move inland.
